"Anything else?"

"Oh, yeah. I've got lots more where that came from." Zack smiled wearily. "Try this one on. How did John Roundtree acquire all of the Rohypnol that he used on those girls, not to speak of the dose he injected into my horse Diablo and tried to inject into me? No one ever saw him driving anywhere. That drug is restricted in the United States, which means he couldn’t have mail-ordered it. The nearest place he could have gotten it is Mexico and even if he somehow managed to get it from down there, it has a relatively short shelf life and he'd have to resupply several times a year. For that he'd need good connections down there and, not the least of it, he'd need money. Lots of money."

"Hmmm."

"Which brings into question that old truck of his. Notice those tires? Not in very good shape, fabric showing and all. I wouldn't drive that truck down the road to the gas station, let alone to Mexico. Or for that matter, to wherever he had to go to find all of those little girls. And there's another thing. Why can't we learn the identity of those dead girls? How can that many little blonde white female children go missing and nobody’s out looking for them?"

"Well! Anything else?"

"Yes, Madame Doctor Whitestone, quite a bit more, but I think that's enough for now. Maybe it does help to talk about it but right now I’m growing frustrated all over again. I just want to relax and enjoy the day with you and Blue. Tell you what. Let's throw some bread, cheese, and wine in a picnic basket and go for a ride. What do you say?"

"I say that's a spectacular idea. You go saddle up the horses, I’ll go put a picnic basket together."

The leisurely ride up the familiar old sheep trail to the dry grass top of the plateau was just what the doctor ordered, serene and restful, the only sounds the scuff and clomp of the horse hooves on the hard packed trail and the occasional call of a western Jay up in a pinion pine.

They left the horses to graze and found a spot under their favorite tree where they spread a thick blanket and put out some cheese, a loaf of bread and the red wine that Libby had selected. Tinkling their glasses together they agreed that life couldn't get much better. Big Blue's heavy tail thumped down on the blanket in agreement.

"How are the boys?" Zack asked, steering to a fresh topic.

"Oh, a pain, as always!" laughed Libby. "George is never around, always off at a class or teaching a seminar at the junior college. And when he’s home, he's always too busy with that damn computer to do any household chores. And, well, you know Lenny! He's always underfoot, always having a dramatic moment."

"Well, in a few years they’ll both be married and off on their own."

"Lenny, maybe. But I'm not betting on George. He's too much of an old lady.
